Ambiguous landscapes conflicted between progress and decline
Remains of Providence, 2004-2009
These images both question and search to understand our attempt to balance between our roles as part of the natural world and participants in contemporary American life. These seemingly simple but fully complex acts of nature and humans begin to border on the sublime.
These images seek to ironically question the notion of progress as we development of our natural environment. They are suspect that blind faith in God or nature (divine or not) will provide and guide earth's inhabitants - that things will just work out. They are concerned with our culture's shortsighted notion of progress in America, one that often ignores sense of place, history, and long-term sustainability and how we might possibly compensate.
